Dominic Ongwen sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment

Today, 6 May 2021, Trial Chamber IX of the International Criminal Court ("ICC" or "Court") sentenced Dominic Ongwen to 25 years of imprisonment following the Trial Judgment in which the Chamber found him guilty for a total of 61 crimes comprising crimes against humanity and war crimes, committed in Northern Uganda between 1 July 2002 and 31 December 2005.

The trial in the case The Prosecutor v. Dominic Ongwen has entered its final stages following closing statements that took place before Trial Chamber IX of the International Criminal Court ("ICC" or "Court") from 10 to 12 March 2020. During the closing statement hearings, the Prosecution, the Legal Representatives of Victims and the Defence presented their final arguments.

The closing statements in the case The Prosecutor v. Dominic Ongwen are scheduled for 10-12 March 2020 before Trial Chamber IX of the International Criminal Court ("ICC" or "Court") in The Hague, The Netherlands. The Prosecution, the Legal Representatives of Victims and the Defence will present their final arguments. Trial Chamber IX is composed of Judge Bertram Schmitt, Presiding judge, Judge Péter Kovács and Judge Raul Cano Pangalangan.

  • Reparation/Compensation

The trial began on 6 December 2016. The Prosecution and the Defence have completed the presentation of their evidence. The Legal Representatives of Victims also called witnesses to appear before the Chamber. On 12 December 2019, the presiding judge declared the closure of the submission of evidence in the case. The closing briefs were filed on 24 February 2020. The closing statements took place from 10 to 12 March 2020. On 4 February 2021, Trial Chamber IX found Dominic Ongwen guilty for a total of 61 crimes comprising crimes against humanity and war crimes, committed in Northern Uganda between 1 July 2002 and 31 December 2005. On 6 May 2021, Trial Chamber IX sentenced Dominic Ongwen to 25 years of imprisonment. 

On 15 December 2022, the Appeals Chamber confirmed the decisions of Trial Chamber IX on Dominic Ongwen’s guilt and sentence. On 18 December 2023, Mr Ongwen was transferred to Norway to serve his sentence of imprisonment. 

Next steps: The conviction and the sentence are now final. 

A phase dedicated to the reparations to victims is ongoing. On 28 February 2024, Trial Chamber IX delivered its Order on Reparations to victims.

Ongwen case: ICC Appeals Chamber confirms the Trial Chamber’s decision on motions requesting dismiss of the charges

Today, 17 July 2019, the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court (« ICC » or « Court ») delivered its judgment unanimously rejecting the appeal of Mr Dominic Ongwen and consequently confirming Trial Chamber IX's decision of 7 March 2019, entitled 'Decision on Defence Motions Alleging Defects in the Confirmation Decision'. ICC judges in Ongwen case visit northern Uganda

: 11 June 2018

From 3 to 9 June 2018, the judges of Trial Chamber IX of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Judge Bertram Schmitt, Presiding Judge, Judge Péter Kovács, and Judge Raul C. Pangalangan, visited the Republic of Uganda. The Chamber, which is trying the case of The Prosecutor v. Dominic Ongwen, visited the charged attack sites in the case. The Chamber visited Pajule, Odek, Lukodi and Abok. At the time of the alleged attacks, IDP camps were located at each of these locations.
