Ongwen case: closing statements to commence on 10 March 2020

On 23 October 2019, Judge Bertram Schmitt, Presiding Judge of the Trial Chamber IX of the International Criminal Court ("ICC" or "Court"), issued an order setting the closing statements in the case The Prosecutor v. Dominic Ongwen to commence in the ICC courtroom on 10 March 2020. The closing briefs in this case shall be filed by 26 February 2020. [Corrigendum: on 4 December 2019, the Chamber decided that the closing briefs have to be filed by 19 February 2020]

Practical information related to these hearings will be made public in due course.

The trial in the case of The Prosecutor v. Dominic Ongwen opened on 6 December 2016. Dominic Ongwen is accused of 70 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in northern Uganda. The Prosecution has completed its presentation of evidence, and the Legal Representatives of Victims also called witnesses to appear before the Chamber. The Defence started its presentation of evidence on 1 October 2018. In the order, the Presiding Judge states that the closure of the submission of evidence is expected to be declared in December 2019.
